Analysis of the Effectiveness of Standardized Testing and High School GPA as Metrics of College Success

The question this study seeks to answer is “Is standardized testing or high school GPA a better predictor of a students first year college GPA?” This topic was of great interest to me because standardized testing makes frequent appearances in the media and neither side of the political aisle seems content with the current system. Education is often a bipartisan issue, both sides agreeing of its importance but it is often underfunded and there is no clear solution. Many administrations, on both federal and state levels dislike the format of standardized testing but the issue remains that a neutral yardstick must exist for equitable college admissions decision making.

The question of which is more effective has stayed fairly consistent throughout the course of the study but as more research was done there began to be a second question that needed answering. “Should standardized testing be used at all?” Even if there is agreement for a neutral yardstick, if standardized testing proves to be ineffective, continuing to factor it into student college admissions seems illogical.
