• Babel

    Once upon a time

When the Earth was very new

    A tower touched the heavens

To offer its people a beautiful view

    The tower caressed the sky

With fingers of mud and stone

So man could rise above land

    And stare into the unknown

    But The Almighty loathed competition

So He hated their Tower of Babel

And as punishment for their curiosity

He gave their language a bit of a scrabble

What once was always cohesive was now in many

What was always one was now in two

This was the punishment God decided

For those who wanted something new

    So like called to like

And the people drifted flocking to their own

    Except for two young women

Who sat together on steps of stone

    They looked at each other

For they now had no words they could share

But what they shared was a look of sadness

    At this now torrid affair

No more shared whispers on the steps

    Or giggles beneath doors

    But they supposed

They would still have their silent walks

Or picking flowers in the outdoors

    For who needed words anyway

When your bond is not one made for Earth

So they decided to reap this new silence

    For all Heaven was worth

    Over time, Babel was covered

    In vines, trees, and moss

But the girls were never bothered

By the treasure they had lost

For in time they would speak again

Not in this life but the next

They had been beyond words for such a long time

Their bond was always just too complex

And if in their next life, they happen to be kept apart again

    They will not worry

    For there is no barrier

That is stronger than a friend
